Habit Tracker Excel Template (Free, Any Excel Version)
A habit tracker in Excel is a grid of dates and habits where you type x, or tick a checkbox, for each day done. Our free template needs no Microsoft 365: in-cell checkboxes, SCAN and LAMBDA are newer features, so its streaks use helper columns and its completion rate divides by days elapsed, not by days in the month.
Most Excel habit tracker tutorials start with the same instruction: select the grid and choose Insert > Checkbox. If you own Excel 2021, Excel 2019, or even Excel 2024, that command is not there, and the tutorial gives you nothing else. In-cell checkboxes, like the SCAN and LAMBDA functions that newer guides use for streaks, are Microsoft 365 features. So we built a free template that does not need any of them, tested every formula, and wrote down why each one is shaped the way it is.
What is the best free habit tracker template for Excel?
The best Excel habit tracker template is one whose numbers stay correct in the version of Excel you actually own: dates it builds itself, a completion rate measured against days elapsed, and a streak that survives the change of month. Ours does that with ordinary functions, costs nothing, asks for no email address, and contains no macros or add-ins.
Download the habit tracker template for Excel (.xlsx). Open the Setup sheet, check the year, type up to six habits, then go to the current month and type x in a cell when the habit is done.
| Sheet | What it does |
|---|---|
| Setup | The year and up to six habit names. Every other sheet reads from here, so you type each habit once. |
| Jan to Dec | One sheet per month: dates and weekdays fill in from the year, 28 to 31 rows as needed, with a done today count on each row |
| Month dashboard | Current streak, longest streak, days done and completion rate for each habit, plus a bar chart of completion |
| Colours | Done days fill indigo, past missed days turn pale red, today is outlined, future days stay blank |
| Year | Completion per habit per month, a year figure, the best streak, and a column chart of the twelve months |
Excel habit tracker. A workbook in which each row is a date, each column is a habit, and each cell records whether that habit was done that day. Formulas turn the grid into a streak, the number of consecutive days done, and a completion rate, the share of elapsed days on which the habit was done.
Which Excel versions have checkboxes, SCAN and LAMBDA?
In-cell checkboxes exist only in Excel for Microsoft 365, SCAN and LAMBDA in Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024, and LET goes back to Excel 2021. That comes straight from the Applies to line of Microsoft's own help pages, read on 9 October 2026. The checkbox page lists Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows and Mac, and nothing else.
The surprise is Excel 2024. The Excel team announced in-cell checkboxes on 27 June 2024, and Office 2024 went on sale later that year, yet the one-time purchase version does not have them. A Microsoft Q&A answer explains why: a perpetual version's feature set is frozen during development, and anything added to Microsoft 365 after that point stays subscription only. Google's autocomplete shows the confusion it creates, with separate suggestions for how to add a checkbox in Excel 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2021.
There is an older kind of checkbox in every version, the Form Control on the Developer tab. It floats above the grid instead of living in a cell, and each one has to be linked to a cell by hand before a formula can read it, so 31 days by six habits means 186 links. For a habit grid, a typed x is faster, and it lives inside the cell it describes.
How do you make a habit tracker in Excel from scratch?
Five steps and about twenty minutes, and the step most people get wrong is the first one: where the dates come from. A popular shortcut builds the month from TODAY(). It looks clever until the 1st of the next month, when every date in the sheet moves forward and the ticks you made in October now sit next to November dates. Type the year once instead and build each month from it.
- Put the year in a cell on its own sheet, here Setup!B2. In A9 of the October sheet, enter
=DATE(Setup!$B$2,10,1). In A10, enter=IF(A9="","",IF(MONTH(A9+1)=10,A9+1,""))and fill down to A39. The month stops on its own at 28, 30 or 31 days. - Put habit names across row 8. Each one should resolve to a yes or a no, so "read more" is vague, but "20 pages before bed" is tickable. Our list of 150 habit tracker ideas written as tickable conditions helps if this is the step you are stuck on.
- In B2, count the days elapsed in the month, which is the denominator for everything else:
=IF(TODAY()<$A$9, 0,
MIN(TODAY(), MAX($A$9:$A$39)) - $A$9 + 1)- For each habit, count done days with two COUNTIFs, one for a typed x and one for a checkbox, and divide by B2. COUNTIF ignores case, so X and x both count.
=(COUNTIF(C9:C39, TRUE) + COUNTIF(C9:C39, "x")) / $B$2- Add the streak helper column described in the next section, then use View > Freeze Panes on C9 so the dates and habit names stay visible on day 24.
How do you count a habit streak in Excel without SCAN?
With one helper column per habit that adds one on a done day and resets to zero on a miss; the maximum of that column is the longest streak. It works in every Excel version since 2007, and you can watch the count climb row by row when something looks wrong. In L9, next to the first habit, enter this and fill it down to L39:
=IF(OR(C9=TRUE, C9="x"), N(L8) + 1, 0)N turns L8, whether it holds a header or nothing, into zero, so the first day needs no special case. =MAX(L9:L39) is the longest streak. In the template, the first row of each month starts from the last value of the previous month's helper column instead of zero, so a streak that runs from 25 September to 8 October reads 14, not 8. We checked that exact case when testing the file.
The current streak needs one guard that most templates skip. At 9 in the morning you have not done today's habit yet, so today's cell is empty and a naive formula says your streak is zero. The template reads today's value if it is above zero and yesterday's value otherwise, so today only counts as a miss once it is over:
=IF($B$2=0, 0,
IF(OR(INDEX(L$9:L$39,$B$2)>0, TODAY()>MAX($A$9:$A$39), $B$2=1),
INDEX(L$9:L$39,$B$2),
INDEX(L$9:L$39,$B$2-1)))If you do have Microsoft 365 or Excel 2024, SCAN does the longest streak in one cell with no helper column: =MAX(SCAN(0, C9:C39, LAMBDA(a, v, IF(OR(v=TRUE, v="x"), a+1, 0)))). It is the method our Google Sheets habit tracker template uses, because every Google Sheets user has SCAN. In Excel, a file that relies on it breaks the moment you send it to someone on Excel 2021.
What do the free Excel habit trackers online actually contain?
We opened the two downloadable .xlsx files and read three build guides from the current results on 9 October 2026, and none of them names which Excel versions have in-cell checkboxes. The table records what we read, not what the pages promise. TemplateLab and My Online Training Hub returned 403 to our requests and are not included, so this is a sample, not a census.
| Source | What we read | Completion divides by | What we found |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spreadsheet Daddy | .xlsx opened | No formula | Zero formulas in the file. Twelve month blocks with fixed day numbers, February always 29 days, every cell pre-filled FALSE |
| 24Billions | .xlsx opened | Every day of the month (progress bar) | Twelve sheets with dates built from year and month cells, and ticks counted as a check mark, 1 or TRUE. No streak formula |
| XDA Developers | Build guide | 30, typed by hand | "Head to Insert and add checkboxes", no version named. Fixed 30 is wrong for 31 day months and February |
| HabitBox | Build guide | Both month and through today | The only one to separate full month from progress through today. Says to use a version that has Insert > Checkbox, without naming one. No workbook |
| ExcelGuru | Template page | Your goal | Counts a typed X with COUNTIF. Mentions streaks, with no streak formula on the page |
Dividing by the whole month is not a rounding issue. Tick every box from 1 to 5 October and a whole-month tracker reports 5 out of 31, or 16 percent, for a perfect record. Divided by days elapsed, the same record reads 100 percent. The first week of a month is exactly when a new habit is most fragile, and a number that understates you sixfold during that week is a reason to stop opening the file.
Tick every box from 1 to 5 October and a whole-month tracker reports 16 percent for a perfect record.
The same logic is why the Year sheet starts counting a habit from the first month you ticked it. Start in October and the year figure reads your October, not your October averaged with nine empty months. And it is why we chart completion rather than streaks: a streak drops to zero after one missed day and takes the whole chart with it, a case we made at length in streaks versus consistency.
What can an Excel habit tracker not do?
It records well, but it stays private, and private records are the weakest kind of tracking in the research. Harkin and colleagues pooled 138 experiments in a 2016 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin. Monitoring progress helped overall, but progress kept private and reported to no one had the smallest effect (d = 0.19), while progress reported to at least one other person had more than twice the effect (d = 0.47). We walk through those figures in what a habit tracker is and whether it works.
A workbook on your laptop delivers the recording and none of the reporting. It also waits for you to open it. On the evening you are tired, nothing in Excel notices that column C has been blank for three days. If you prefer paper, our free printable habit trackers have the same strength and the same limit.
Where StellarHabit fits, and where it does not
StellarHabit is a habit tracker built around the part a spreadsheet leaves out: your habits are visible to the friends you choose, and progress is shown as a consistency percentage rather than a streak, so one missed day does not wipe out a good month. It runs in any browser, so there is nothing to install and no Excel version to check.
It is not for everyone. If you want to track twenty things, design your own formulas, or keep everything to yourself, the Excel template on this page is the better tool and you should keep using it. StellarHabit suits a few habits you have already failed to hold on your own, where the missing piece is somebody noticing. If that is you, the first step is picking the right person, and we explained how in how to find an accountability partner.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free habit tracker template for Excel?
Yes. The template on this page is a standard .xlsx file with no email address required, no macros and no paid upgrade. It contains a Setup sheet for the year and up to six habits, twelve month sheets that build their own dates, and a Year sheet with a completion chart. Every formula is visible and editable. It does not need Microsoft 365, because it avoids the newer in-cell checkboxes and the SCAN, LAMBDA and LET functions, and relies only on functions that have existed since Excel 2007.
How do I make a habit tracker in Excel?
Put real dates down column A, generated from a typed year and month rather than from TODAY, and habit names across row 8. Type x in a cell when the habit is done. Count each habit with COUNTIF for TRUE plus COUNTIF for x, divide by the number of days elapsed, and add one hidden helper column per habit that adds one on a done day and resets to zero on a miss. The maximum of that column is your longest streak. Budget about twenty minutes, or download the finished file.
Why can't I find Insert > Checkbox in Excel?
Because in-cell checkboxes are a Microsoft 365 feature. Microsoft's own help page lists them for Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows and Mac only, and the Excel team announced them in June 2024. Excel 2024, 2021, 2019 and older one-time purchase versions do not have the command, even though Excel 2024 shipped after the announcement. In those versions, type x in the cell instead. A tracker whose formulas count both x and TRUE works the same way in every version.
Can an Excel habit tracker include a graph?
Yes, and it needs no add-in. Point an ordinary bar chart at the row that holds each habit's completion rate, so the bars move every time you type an x. The template on this page already has one bar chart per month sheet and a clustered column chart on the Year sheet, showing each habit month by month. Chart the completion rate rather than the streak, because a streak drops to zero after one missed day and makes the whole chart look like a failure.
How do you count a habit streak in Excel without SCAN?
Use a helper column. Next to each habit, enter =IF(OR(C9=TRUE,C9="x"),N(L8)+1,0) and fill it down: it adds one on every done day and resets to zero on a miss. N turns the header text above the first row into zero, so the first day needs no special case. MAX over that column gives the longest streak. This works in every Excel version since 2007. SCAN with LAMBDA does the same in one cell, but only in Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024.
Does this Excel habit tracker work in Google Sheets?
It uses only functions that also exist in Google Sheets, such as COUNTIF, INDEX, N, DATE and TODAY, and an .xlsx file can be imported through File > Import. Charts and conditional formatting may look slightly different after conversion. If you live in Google Sheets, our dedicated Google Sheets habit tracker template is the better starting point, because it was built there and uses checkboxes that Sheets offers to everyone, whatever their plan, which Excel does not.
